Birth Control
A MyEndometriosisTeam Member asked a question 💭

I have not had the surgery to have endo confirmed, but it is suspected by my new doc. She has put me on Yaz as I don't tolerate other types of bc. I am wondering what to expect from being back on bc? Will it supress the growth, symptoms? I assume that it won't make it regress? She has also mentioned wanting to send me to a specialist for, what I am not sure. Possible surgery I think?

I'm in the exact same boat as you! I was diagnosed with suspected endo last August 2014, but haven't had surgery yet. I was also put on Yaz because it had worked best for me in the past. I will tell you that my period and ovulation pain is WAY better, and my periods are more normal (lighter flow, fewer clots). So far being back on the pill has been amazing for both the severity of my periods and my pain. I'm going back in for another ultrasound/MRI soon to see if my cysts have grown at all in the past year or if the birth control seems to be doing its job for me.

I think that's my birth control... I'm not at home to check. I did really well on it for a few years....

Just out of curiosity how long did it take after you went back on the pill to experience pain relief?

I was on Alesse for about 5 years, then went off for about 2 years now I am back on it for about 1 week.

@A MyEndometriosisTeam Member i am in Canada, and we don't get ultrasounds unless ordered. That is strange though as i had an ER doc order it and went to my regular gyno who told me that the ultrasound cant detect endo...she said maybe a cyst but that would be all... She has also taken me off yaz to see of that helped the symptoms i developed... I am getting blood work done this week so hopefully that will tell me something it is good to know about the CA-125 levels, I hope if she suspects endo she has ordered that test.

@A MyEndometriosisTeam Member, I'm currently living in Belgium and here they give you an ultrasound at every annual appointment. So that's how they figured out that I had endo, was from a standard ultrasound. Which makes me think that if they would give ultrasounds at your regular annual appointment in the US that maybe they would have found this a lot earlier. So right after that appointment my doctor sent me for an MRI to get better pictures of my endometriomas and to sort of confirm his suspicion of endo. Of course, you can't "confirm" endo without doing a laparoscopy, but this gave him a pretty good idea that this is what I have. I also took the CA-125 blood test. This is a blood test that is typically done for ovarian cancer, but people with endometriosis have slightly elevated CA-125 levels. Normal is under 35 and I was at 37, which is also another indicator that points towards endo. Anyway, give the Yaz a couple of months. My first month on it was terrible too. I've been on it for almost a year now and it's great! I have my follow-up ultrasound on October 7th, so hopefully it will tell me that the endometriomas aren't still growing! Fingers crossed!
