Anyone Experience Insomnia/night Panic Attacks (especially The Week Before Your Cycle)?
A MyEndometriosisTeam Member asked a question 💭

Hi there!

I was wondering if anyone experiences insomnia (trouble falling asleep) and/or night panic attacks?

I've noticed the insomnia and night panic attacks are especially worse right before my menstrual cycle.

Doctors immediately think anxiety, but I'm not entirely sure due to the timing of it.

The night panic attacks usually happen when I'm asleep for about an hour or so and I suddenly wake up and feel like something is seriously wrong (heart is pounding, tingle sensations/like an… read more

@A MyEndometriosisTeam Member ahh I feel like the insomnia and anxiety are harder to manage than the endometriosis itself!

Hi. I know you posted this a long time ago but just in case anyone else reads this I wanted to say that I have the exact same situation happen to me at night. I have recently noticed it happens during my cycle. But I’ve been having it for years and my doctor first diagnosed it as mental trauma. I’ve never really experienced serious mental trauma and this feels much more physical.
I also feel as though I am shaking when I wake up during one of these episodes. They way you described the electric current is exactly the way I feel. And the shaking is so violent that it feels like the whole bed is shaking. My heart is pounding each time I get up and i feel a little out of breath. But it only lasts a few minutes and it’s usually only within the first few hours of me falling asleep.
I am happy I found this because I have been dealing with this for years and now I can pinpoint it more to endo than to anything else and hopefully my doctor might have more answers for me.

How interesting, I have had insomnia since I was a teen. Which of course is when my periods started, ive struggled with it ever since and take melatonin tablets at night for it which sometimes work and sometimes dont. I also have anxiety and clench/grind my teeth at night.

It also happens outside of my cycle; but it's more frequent during that time. I also have no idea when I have a cycle because it comes when it comes and with Mirena, I don't actually have menstral flow, so it's not like I know when it's coming. I make the correlation the week or 2 after with the months I actually do get spotting or a lot of cramping.

They also aren't night terrors. I'm not shaking, or breathing heavy, or scared (aside from the weird feeling itself of waking up) I'm actually really cool, calm and collected when these episodes happen. They aren't from nightmares or anything like that - happens when I'm just in the midst of following asleep, so not ptsd (plus I have no reasons for ptsd)

I've actually read it could be related to bruxism (grinding/clenching of the jaw), which I have. Apparently an episode of this increases your brain activity and heart rate. My husband always comments that's he hears me grinding my teeth when I'm beginning to fall asleep.
