Mirena During Lap
A MyEndometriosisTeam Member asked a question 💭

Hey guys, I'm 19 and recently got diagnosed in January. My doctor suggested I get the mirena whilst getting my lap done in August. Iv read so many horror stories and also so many feel good stories. I'm so undecided, I want this pain to end. Will it be worth it in the long run?
My doctor also said it will make sex easier as currently it's super painful? Not sure if that's true?
Help!
Thanks :)

I may not be on time with his post for you but Ibdecided to get the mirena after carefully considering my options. I have not been diagnosed as such yet with endo, but the mirena was my last resort before surgery to "have a look around". At first I said no way in hell am I shoving something up there.. My friend had a horrible time with hers and ended up getting a hysterectomy( later I found out from her that it wasn't inserted correctly and she had a perforation ... And went into septic shock). I had to make the choice and I figured I've had my children and I can't fall pregnant again for an unknown reason (most likely due to my vag issues ) so I weighed the risks and was ok with the fact that I may have a bad experience but I've had my "child bearing" time. I'm two months in with the mirena and my bleeding has almost stopped (I hav been bleeding since October last year ... Every day... And the pill never worked). My pain is almost done nil (there are those odd days with a bit of discomfort) and the only real side effect I can notice is the return of my acne I had before I was ever on the pill or pre pregnancy. I'm ok to take acne over my bleeding and pain at this point. I can honestly say so far so good. My gyno was honest with me and told me that it's an individual thing as our hormones play a huge role in how our bodies react to it.

Hi @A MyEndometriosisTeam Member,

I am 22 and had the Mirena inserted last year. I have had mixed experiences with it. Just don't be afraid to speak up if you aren't feeling well with it. If you have any concerns make sure you get them addressed, that can be just advice from your doctor or an ultrasound to make sure its still in place. The doctors or nurses will tell you how to check for the strings still, make sure you do that. You have control of your body, don't let anyone tell you different.

One thing to remember as well is don't compare your pain to someone else's. That is my biggest problem I am always comparing and just trying to put aside my pain.

Make sure you have some support around you as well :) if you need a chat i am willing to be there for you. good luck with your surgery :) xx

I was diagnosed with endo in March during a laporoscopy and hysteroscopy. I am 38 and had been on the pill since 19. The gyno suggested I get the mirena in during that surgery (as I'd not had kids it would be better to be inserted during surgery). I too, had read SO many horror stories about it and it took me 3 months to decide whether to do it or not. The docs told me that it was quite easy to remove it in a normal doctors surgery if I didn't take to it or had problems. I have not regretted having it inserted and have not suffered from any of the things that I had read about. In saying that though, I have to have a hysterectomy at the end of the year and it will be removed anyway (not having that totally because of the endo as I have other big problems also). Keep in mind that the hormone in the mirena is only released inside your uterus, not throughout your body like the pill. Good luck.

Hi @A MyEndometriosisTeam Member,
I am 10 days out from Laparoscopy to remove 2 ovarian cysts and a lot of endometriosis. I also had a D&C (dilation and cutation) done and had the mirena inserted. I have had the mirena before, first time I had it inserted awake and I do not recommend that!!!, it was extremely painful, I ended up with a bad infection and I had huge bleeding problems afterwards for over a year I bled almost 10 months out of the 12 and ended up with iron deficiency anemia.....I had it removed however....

I have to decided to give it another go for a few reasons, I have a brilliant gynecologist now who assured me that placing the mirena during surgery is much more reliable as he can see where he is putting it, the fact that everything will be "cleaned out" will give me a much better chance of it working this time with less bleeding.
So far 10days out from surgery I have only had 1 day of very light bleeding (unheard of for me) and some cramping....ive taken some panadine forte for it and that has helped.
From my experience so far, the 2 times I have had it done have been completely different and I feel that is due to the specialist I have looking after me now. Having someone that really understands endometriosis and the mirena so important!
Best of luck to you. 😊

@A MyEndometriosisTeam Member I see your last month was 2 months ago, how are you feeling now? I go in Friday for the Mirena insertion (as an office visit) and I am very nervous of the side effects
