The Downside To Codeine (UK Painkiller)
A MyEndometriosisTeam Member asked a question 💭

Okay so I don’t know if anyone else is prescribed Codeine 30mg (2 every 4-6hours) but is it me or is it the worst painkiller. I can take 2 and in an hour I’m asleep or the opposite I’m wide awake and can’t sit still. It either makes me like I have done some energy drug or I’m comatosed??. Then to add to that where credit is due it stops the pain but then it makes me so constipated, I’m drinking and nothing helps then I have to take laxatives because I have gone 3 days without the toilet and I’m… read more

I have been using voltaran suppositories and they have been the biggest help without many nasty side-effects. Using suppositories isn't for everyone, but they go straight to the location of your pain. I felt like I had tried everything, but when I was introduced to this it was a massive help.

With codine. I think it can put u on a high... and it also can knock u out... yes constipation is a side effect... I drunk slot of fresh orange and that seemed to help... I believe it is good pain relief. And yeah it can also make u feel good. Be carful tho because it's addictive.
And even tho the reccomend like every 4-6 hours u just take it as little as possible. Also it can cause really bad head aches when u stop taking them... be carful xx

I can't take codeine because of the constipation side effect. Once it got so bad that I was crying on a loo from pain and teared my anus (now I have anal fiscula which needs to be surgically corrected). However, Zapain (which is branded codeine w paracetamol) does not have this effect on me. Maybe try to ask your GP for that. And at first when started takinh it, it used to make me very high and drowsy, but later my body got used to it so I didn't get that anymore 🙏

Voltaran suppositories are prescription only but you can get your doctor to write you an authority script so you don't have to keep going back to them. You can also use them in addition to taking paracetamol on those really bad pain days.
