Excision
A MyEndometriosisTeam Member asked a question 💭

Who has had excision surgery and has it helped with your pain?? My pain is so severe that it’s affecting my entire life. I am considering this option but I am terrified. My endometriosis got a lot worse once I tied my tubes.

I've just had wide excision surgery- where the doctor carved out the endo from my internal organs. I woke up and could breathe without pain for the first time in twenty years! Keep in mind I wasn't diagnosed with endo until last year, I'm thirty eight now. Since wide excision surgery, there's been no more pain, bloating, headaches, fatigue, and I feel like a new person. This is the third surgery I've had in six months to manage pelvic pain, and unlike the other two- first one with a regular Ob/gyn where he just excised, or cut, the endo out- and the second one a scope where the doctor couldn't remove the endo I had so much- I've experienced genuine relief. I'd encourage you to be sure you know what type of surgery your doc is offering. Excision simply means cutting the endo out. Some docs just cut it off the surface or burn it off (ablation) but then it grows back in a year or two.I hurt again immediately after my first surgey because that's what that doc did and because he didn't get it all. Wide excision is where the doc carves the endo out of the tissue. It's not supposed to grow back for years. Some doctors can do it with a robot and minimally invasive- others cut you open. This is a convo for you and your doctor of course but of all the things I've tried- meds, accupuncture, herbal supplements, diet- surgery has provided the most relief and been worth every inconvenience during recovery! Good luck in making the decision that's right for you! Melissa

Glad to help, Rebecca! Be sure to ask lots of questions and that your doctor answers them and makes you completely comfortable with the road ahead. Good luck!

Thank you Melissa. I am considering all of my options. I am leaning towards this surgery more and more. I am heading into the doctor soon to discuss my options. I appreciate you sharing your experiences.

What would you say your pain level was at after the surgery? How long was your recovery time?
