How Long After Excision Do Your Periods Become Less Painful?
A MyEndometriosisTeam Member asked a question 💭

So I had excision surgery on my stage 4 endo back in October 2020, since then my daily pain and symptoms have decreased but I am still struggling with painful periods, hard bleeding and clots, and extreme fatigue. My doctor waa about as helpful as dirt and his response was “no way to know, some woman do great some dont. Just stay away from sugar”. I thought after a couple months post surgery I would go to typical period woahs, but I still feel trapped in pain, and I get down on myself because I… read more

Did you ask about the possibility of adenomyosis? I'm sorry your Dr is not being helpful, that is so frustrating. My periods got so much better after my excision last Sept, but I still have some ovulation pain and no one can offer me a direct explanation for that.

Hi! So I had a very similar situation. I has excision surgery fir my stage 4 endo back in October 2020 as well. My first period was awful after surgery, I contacted the doctor and he told me the first period after surgery is weird and it should get better..second one same thing. They told me to give it a good 3 months plus put me on another birth control and unfortunately it never got better. I’m 3 weeks post hysterectomy now. Definitely don’t give up or accept this as your life. Yes we have to learn to deal with our pain but still be proactive and be your own advocate! Something has to help us.. it’s just finding the right treatment options. Endo sucks though 😫 I’m sorry I couldn’t be more helpful, but I wanted you to know you’re not alone in feeling this way. I hope you feel better soon 💜💜

BrittanyBridges, I am empathizing with how much your are doing to manage your symptoms and what that one week per month is like for you. It is so hard to keep getting up after that. I had my last endo excision in 2017 and have been working these past four years to understand why I am still having chronic pain as well as the cyclical troubles you mentioned . It has been confusing. My doctor says that I likely have adenomyosis. It can produce inflammatory molecules that go body-wide. I've decided to get a hysterectomy. He says a large number of women feel better afterwards. In the meantime, I'm am trying so hard to do whatever I can to reduce inflammation. I do cardio on an exercise bike and climb stairs everyday. I started with just 5 gentle minutes and added a few minutes every week, stopping when I got to a point that felt right to me. I stop exercising when I am bleeding and slow the pace when I am in pain. It has reduced the heavy bleeding of my period and the inflammation and I sleep a little better than before. Also, removing saturated fats totally from my diet has helped.
Bright_rain, I have been having ovulation pain as well. It was explained to me that this can be from a few things: 1. A suspended ovary--the ovary gets stuck in scar tissue and hurts with the stretching that happens when it ovulates. 2. Hemorrhagic Ovulation--after the ovary releases an egg, the corpus luteum fails to involute and a cyst forms. Some women have this quite often and it can cause a lot of pain when it ruptures. I was able to have a transvaginal ultrasound almost right when I was ovulating and they caught it in the imaging. Luckily, hemorrhagic ovulation went away for me after a few months. If it kept occurring, I believe the treatment was Mirena.

I am not an expert in the slightest, but I hope my sharing these experiences will help in some way.

I have adenomyosis too. I've had three excision surgeries for endometriosis, but what helped with the adenomyosis was the Mirena iud and continuous birth control pills. Because every time I'd get my period or bleed it caused so much pain and inflammation. Which my dr said was a result of the adenomyosis especially. So now I don't have periods, just occasional spotting. It has definitely helped my pain but is by no means a cure all. And of course my solution wouldn't work for someone who was trying to start a family. But, there are some options! Hope you feel better and find some relief!

I had my deep excision surgery back in oct 2020 as well. My surgeons are on the top of the list. However, endo is a disease with so many unknowns. I really only had one month of a decent cycle, I have been in agony since. They now found beginning stages of adenomyosis and believe that my left ovary may be adhered due to scarring or possible endo. We are exploring the option of progesterone now to see.
