What Is Your Position On Paid Menstrual Leave?
A MyEndometriosisTeam Member asked a question 💭

In South Korea, women are entitled so a brief sick leave due to dysmenorrhea. For years many countries have been considering offering it to women employed with conditions or who are unable to work during their menstrual cycle
Many women are discouraged by the thought because we have sought for equality for so long, and the possibility that other women with little pain will abuse it. Although i agree with what they are saying very much, i would still need a few days off before/during my period… read more

I think it would be greatly welcomed. I've read up on studies done which showed in a workplace an increase of sick days per year per employee actually found a reduction in sick days taken overall. Partly due to employees being more likely to take a day when they really needed to, rather than trying to push through and not use sick days (and in this case, spread more sickness throughout the workplace). The studies also showed very little evidence of abusing the system because everyone got what they needed if they were unwell. I think there's hope that it could work, and would love to have it as an option!

This is a very interesting topic and I have never heard of this as well, we do not get these options in the states ... I think maybe there should be limitations so it’s not abused...

@A MyEndometriosisTeam Member I completely understand your point of view. My boss is a male and I expected he wouldn't be understanding but most of the time he's the one who tells me to take the day off. I'm really lucky. But I would like to have paid sick days tbh.

I think even just more awareness of how debilitating it can be for some woman and understanding that at times we might need a day off due to it would even make a huge difference. I had to take a day off work today because I just got my period and I literally couldn’t get out of bed. I still felt so guilty and silly for taking a day off because of my ‘period’. I’m very fortunate that I work in an environment that is mostly woman and some who have endo themselves so they are more understanding. I can’t imagine what it must be like to try and explain this to a male colleague or boss who just doesn’t get it or who doesn’t want to hear about it.

I think that as long we have a capitalist economy in combo with a less representative political system (where donors are more important than constituents) workers will always be put second to profits. Then we get arguments about people costing more, their value being less because they exit more often, one sex being less capable etc. as justifications for institutionalizing racism and sexism and forward progress stalls. Just like these old wives tales about abusers (whether it's disability, maternity leave, sick leave or other social insurance programs) are perennial no matter the lack of facts to support them. I think if we could ever have a system that affords a living wage, real time off for babies or illness, and whatnot without harming employeers or profits -- then that's progress and definitely something to work towards. We should take the countries this works as examples and work towards that.
So, Id definitely support this - as long as it came with real support because some people need to be educated -& - some assurances need to be in place (like it needs to be paid out by an insurance program like disability is). But I don't think we're there yet...
