What Should I Know?
A MyEndometriosisTeam Member asked a question 💭

Can anyone tell me what to expect after my first laparoscopy? Pain, bleeding? What’s the recovery time? The normal time to go back to work? Will sex be painful? I’m on constant birth control so I’m not sure how that will work post op, if my dr will keep me on it or make me get my cycle...also I have breakthrough bleeding now for almost a week and my surgery is in two days...can I wear a tampon for the surgery? I’m so overwhelmed this is my first surgery and it’s coming up quick! Any tips??

What are they doing during your lap? Is it diagnostic? Are they doing ablation or excision? In addition, are you going to have a d&c or hysteroscopy? During my 2nd lap, they did excision, d&c and a hysteroscopy. My doctor informed me that any abdominal type surgery can take 2-6 weeks for recovery depending on your condition. I took about 4 weeks before i felt i could exercise again and had sex but it was very painful so i waited another 2 weeks and i was fine and its been great since! I bled/spot for about 7 weeks because i had the mirena placed during surgery. Expect to spot for a few weeks. If you work, i recommend taking about 10 days off from work go allow yourself to rest and heal. Some of the worst pain is the gas pain afterward.. so have something to help with gas pain and take small walks. My heated blanket saved my life and eat soft foods! I would just tell the nurse if you are bleeding.. they will likely have you wear nothing bottom down. They wont be worried about a little blood. If they do a d&c or hysteroscopy, they enter through the vagina and will likely cause some bleeding anyways! Good luck girl!

After my surgery they told me not to insert anything / have sex for 6 weeks. One strange thing i found With the surgery is you get gas cramps in your shoulders and upper back. Get some gas X for your recovery

I do not think you should wear a tampax. It’s not safe.
It could take longer than planned and I nearly lost my life to toxic shock syndrome. Please be carful x

No, u cannot wear a tampon. And u cannot wear tampons after. Usually standard is 2 weeks off work, but everyone varies. No sex until dr clears you. No heavy lifting for 2 weeks. Ask your dr about thr bc pills. U will most likely have shoulder pain from the gas they pump in you during surgery to shift your organs. Sleep propped up and walk when u can, thst helps get the gas out of your system. Make sure you have a stool softner or laxative incase you get constipated from the pain meds.

It’s a diagnostic but also they’d do excisions if needed. And thank you I’ll have all that stuff ready!
