Nausea & Breathlessness Post Laparoscopy
A MyEndometriosisTeam Member asked a question 💭

I'm now at day 11 post laparoscopy and get nausea and breathlessness every time I go for a walk...is this normal?! Never had this before the surgery :(

It is normal, it's due to the breathing machines they put on you when under anesthesia. It is worse the longer you have been under. It takes about 3-6 months for your body to recover from surgery.

I had an ERCP done and I had the breathlessness issue for a month-I think because the nerves that innervate your abdomen are also near the ones that innervate your diaphragm, when the abdominal nerves get aggravated the ones in the diaphragm do as well-in my personal opinion, I think that causes mini asthma attacks/wheezing. It can also cause right shoulder pain as the nerves that innervate that shoulder originate in the diaphragm.

I had that too! But I wasn’t going on walks until 20+ days as I just simply couldnt manage. It takes a while to heal and every body is so different. I was off from work for 3 weeks and took the fourth one as holiday and even then it was tiring to commute and I was always scared (still am!) of people walking to close to my belly. Take it easy and don’t push yourself too much :) hope you get better!

Depends... are you taking any painkillers? Generally opioid-based medication does just that. Especially something like morphene - it slows your breething and makes you nauseous

Thanks so much Natecha for answering my query - it has certainly reassured me and also helped me to plan and manage my expectations over the coming months! I had no idea the surgery would affect me in the medium term. I was led to believe that after 2 full weeks I'd be back to normal. Thanks again for your reply.
