Pre-op Assessment Questions
A MyEndometriosisTeam Member asked a question 💭

I have my appointment tomorrow for pre-op assessment before my diagnostic laparoscopy next week. I want to make sure I am asking the right questions. Would you add any to this list?

1. Will I need bowel preparation before the surgery?
2. Can I take painkillers before the surgery?
3. When will I have a follow up appointment?
4. How long should I take off work?
5. Will they remove my IUD while I am under? (awful beast)

Thank you all <3 x

I would ask if they will be excising the endo or using ablation. You don’t want to have surgery performed by a doctor that uses ablation.

They like if you try To have a bowl movement and pee before surgery, while waiting you can use the bathroom, as the IV they give has nutrients and vitamins that make you pee quite a few times.

I’d avoid pain killers as they will give you painkillers right before they put you to sleep.

Follow up is 6 weeks after your surgery.

I had a full two weeks off, but I started earlier and was fine. Walk lots every day tarting day after surgery to prevent blood clots and other complications.

Just tell your doc that you have an IUD, tell him your concern and you can proceed with care

Best of luck with surgery and hope you have a great recovery (:

My dr approved an anti-anxiety medication before the procedure. Also be sure to start stool softeners the day of otherwise you may end up with comstipation which is a big NO when you abdomen is going to be sore for a while. I took off work for about 4 days and was fine (stage 4 endo with a chocolate cyst removal) but it really depends on you and what they do as my dr was given permission to burn problem areas and take care of as much as she could while I was under so I would not have to have a second go around. I actually walked quite a bit after I woke up from surgery because I wanted the gas they used to get out. It ended up moving to my shoulders anyways for the next 2 days on and off.

Before surgery I meal prepped like crazy since I didn’t know what I was going to be like and I’m on paleo AIP because I was having digestive problems (possibly related to the endo).

After surgery they you won’t be allowed to lift anything too heavy (15lbs for me) so make sure to get anything you need to done which envolnes lifting I.e. cleaning.

My third day after surgery I was pretty nauseous and any extraneous movement would exacerbate it such as taking the dogs out.

That all I can think of right now. I’m 4 days post op at this point and I set my post op with dr for 3 weeks from date of surgery. It takes about a week or 2 for them to wrap everything up on their end.

My dr talked about doing Lupron but I was in shock and after some research am not liking the idea but will discuss more at post-op. I also will be getting a second opinion after my post-op just in case.
