Is It Okay To Take Visanne While You Have The Mirena IUD?
A MyEndometriosisTeam Member asked a question 💭

Hi Ladies. PLEASE HELP! I recently moved to South Korea (from America) and went to a specialist for the first time today. He recommended I start taking Visanne. I really didn't want to take any new meds, as I already have tried Lupron, Femara (usually used for breast cancer), just norethindrone, and some other bc pills.I already had 2 excision surgeries. I also currently have the Mirena IUD. I don't want to try a new treatment but he kept telling me how great and wonderful Visanne is. I am so… read more

@A MyEndometriosisTeam Member this was an old post, and i have now been on Mirena and Visanne for... maybe a year and a half now I think. It has reduced my pain, thankfully. My doctors are watching me closely for other risks like breast cancer or bone loss, which are worries of taking this much hormonal medicine. Thankfully, no problems yet, although I will say I feel like the hormones are a bit for my emotions. But the pain is even just a little bit better, so its worth it for now.
If you end up getting both, it could work for you. Just make sure you listen to your doctor and get advice from them when you make your decision.

Shannon, I am glad you have improved your pain levels, I took Visanne for 7 months and it painwise it is great, it reduced my pain to none after my ablation laparoscopy. But (and this is a big but for me) it gave me breast nodules and this is bad for me as my mother had breast cancer, you can read on the box about its possible side effects and it says "can cause breast cancer" :( but I mentioned to my gyn and she didn´t care much, now when she saw the news in my breasts she told me to stop taking the pill and the pain is back, slowly but back :( she told me to put the Mirena which is expensive and I am not sure about what to do.... Gosh!!
I would say that if you are not in a great deal of pain try not to use the progestine only pill. That was my only side effect on a 7 month treatment.
wish you luck

This is my first time with it, and it has been almost a year on it. I think the Mirena is helping a fair amount. I still have pain almost every day but it's at a low level and it is still really bad when I am on my cycle. Considering I don't have any symptoms on mirena besides acne, I am very satisfied with it as a treatment. Of course I still have pain though. I guess my doctor here doesn't think that is good enough? Or he thinks it could be better.

Hi, iv never tried Visanne but I'm curious as to why you need to try another medication is the Mirena not working for you. The reason I ask this is because I'm on my third coil and the first one wroked fantastic but since then the each one has not worked as well as the first.

I had the mirena coil inserted after my 2nd surgery which was explorative surgery similar to my 1st one (changed drs from a general gynae to an endo specialist). I had constant bleeding for the first 6 months. After the 6 month period, I was told my periods would stop but they didn’t. My gynae recommended I take visanne on top of the mirena which he said would help. It’s been 7 months and my bleeding hasn’t stopped and I don’t really know what to do. It’s been spotting/bleeding everyday and has been getting heavier in the last 3 weeks. My consultant has suggested a 3rd surgery which will be to excise disease (believe to be stage 3/4). Any advice?
