Do I Have A Chance With Mirena?
A MyEndometriosisTeam Member asked a question 💭

I have been on Visanne for 5 months now. Few months back I have started having constant leg muscle pains and leg tiredness (did various tests which indicated that I should not feel any pain in my legs). The pain never ends, painkillers relieve it a little but it's still sore. My blood pressure became too high so I was put on medication for this too. Besides these symptoms, I have terrible fatigue, super dry skin, brittle nails, constant spotting, zero sex drive, or any drive at all. All this… read more

I think it really depends on the person if Mirena helps. My specialist at Stanford did deep excision surgery and then placed the Mirena for me. It has really help me to prevent my reoccurring bouts of severe anemia. My periods are much less painful and symptomatic. I have had some endo symptoms returning 9 months after surgery, however I do feel like it is slowing the regrowth of the lesions. After my first surgery my doctor felt like the lesions were starting to return after a month, so this time has been an improvement. The first two months adjusting to being on Mirena were not fun though. I felt like I was pregnant again, and had the crazy hormonal swings that go with it.

So I can't tell you what or what not to do. I can let you know that after my laparoscopy in Nov 2018 that I was recommended the Mirena IUD to help with my bleeding. I followed my doctors recommendation. The IUD did not stop my bleeding, it actually made it worst, I also had severe cramping after worse then it was before. It did not help my libido. I had no good responses to the Mirena.

Have you had your thyroid tested? It sound like you have low thyroid hormones. Also the Mirena is known to cause cysts. Here’s a study that shows NAC, an amino acid supplement reduces endometrioma size with other positive side effects: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC36...

I've been on Mirena since 2017. Haven't had any issues with it. I still do have endo pain but it's been nice to have no periods for sure!

I've been on Mirena since may 2018 and have had no problems at all. It's been great. Unfortunately, it did not stop my enodmetriomas from getting larger, but I would definitely give it a try. You can always have it removed if its too bad. Good luck!
