Surgery
A MyEndometriosisTeam Member asked a question 💭

Any advice for a laparotomy? I have kissing ovaries and the cysts are too big for laparoscopic surgery. I was wondering if anyone had recommendations for what to take or wear or what to avoid? I’m scheduled for next Monday. Thanks!

And walk as much as possible. You will heal more quickly. Walk a little bit more each day.

Give yourself a good six months to allow your body to really heal. The first three, you will be very tired. Sleep as much as possible. Again be certain to move your legs and walk.

I agree, wear loose fitting clothes for the ride home and bring a pillow with you. I had a laparotomy almost 3 months ago! I’ve been wearing mostly dresses and high waisted skirts because clothes in general were not comfortable. I hope your surgery goes well. Be patient with your body as recovery will take time. Luckily you know ahead of time so you can prepare!

You will be in the hospital for a good few days. I suggest just wearing the hospital gown. For going home, very loose clothing. A roomy dress, very loose-fitting pants and top. I took slippers to the hospital. A pillow for your stomach for support when you cough or sneeze. It will take some time for your bowels to awaken after surgery. They don't like being touched.

Did you do a bowel prep?

Oh, and a nurse at my first surgery gave me an elastic binder. It was like a corset, but it had Velcro so I could put it however tight or loose I wanted. Apparently they offer it to women after a C-section? It was awesome and made it easier than holding a pillow to my belly. I kept it and used it a little after my second surgery, which wasn't quite as extensive. I loved that thing so much and I had laparoscopy, not even a laparotomy! So maybe ask if that's an option.
