Excision
A MyEndometriosisTeam Member asked a question 💭

I’m wondering why it is not a good option to do a combination of excision and cauterizing surgery? The laparoscopic surgery I am currently scheduled for my gynecologist does both excision and cauterization. I’ve been reading that excision only is the way to go. But I would like to know why. I’m currently debating whether not to cancel my scope and try to find another surgeon.

Indeed. I would recommend finding a surgeon who does only excision. The cautery just burns it and leaves it there. It keeps making its own estrogen, getting bigger, and damaging surrounding tissue and nerves. Dr. Cook, who has offices here in CA and Colorado, has a great series of educational videos. He wants patients aware so we can advocate for ourselves and better care. He is very anti-cautery, as are all the endo experts I've consulted. You can see the videos on FB and Instagram. Links below.

Here's part of a note I keep at the ready for copy/pasting. Here's a link to the whole thing. But I put the part about Dr. Cook's videos below

Dr. Cook, who is an excision surgeon in Los Gatos, CA, has lots of helpful videos on his Instagram. He's really pushing for more awareness and patient education so we can make informed decisions
Lecture Dr. Cook gave a few weeks ago. Super educational to me:

Hi Jessica. Is because with excision they cut the lesions from its roots, while with cauterizing they just burn it, so it'll definitely grow back faster. See it like with cauterizing they take care of the tip of the iceberg while with excision they take the whole thing out. It all depends on your particular case.

Cool, @A MyEndometriosisTeam Member, I hope it helps. Also, I had forgotten that he also does surgeries in Durango, Colorado now too.
