Endometrioma Vs Ovarian Cancer
A MyEndometriosisTeam Member asked a question 💭

Hey there!

I’ve been worried lately... I have 2 cysts (1 on each ovary) about 3.5 cm each that my doc says are endometriomas. This is based on ultrasound only, never had a lap. He also said if they get to be over 4cm he’ll want to remove them because of the risk they could be cancer. Should I ask for a lap anyway? Its my understanding that ovarian cancer is hard to detect and once it’s been diagnosed it’s generally in the late stages...

I’d insist on the lap, especially if you’ve never had one... but I would suggest finding a doc who can do excision as well.

Did they test your ca125 levels, too? Are they doing any other testing, like mri? I had a huge endometrioma (actually two in one) in the same spot. They had the same concerns but thankfully it was Endo, not cancer.

Yep, if it’s high, something is going on.. but not necessarily cancer. If it’s low, you may still have cancer.

CA125 is kind of a stupid and irritating test. It stands for cancer antigen and the level can be high in women with endo and no cancer and low in women who actually have ovarian cancer... I don’t know exactly why they use it. My level was slightly elevated. But again, no cancer.

Yeah, I do not get it either. Seems to me it just raises the index of suspicion without really helping answer the question.

Yeah, I would agree with the above. And CA-125 can be elecated in women with endo. In fact, Dr. Seckin tested mine and told me it’s becsuse if it’s high, he can use it to see that the endo improves after surgery. Also, obviously, to be even more on the lookout for signs of ovarian cancer during surgery. I am a huge fan of excision surgery. Don’t know where youare but feel free to read my story and recommendations tab. Here’s a link to a bunch of stuff that has helped me over the years, in case you want it. Let me know, please & thanks, if I can do anything.
