Can Endometriomas Reoccur After Surgery?
A MyEndometriosisTeam Member asked a question 💭

I have 2 endometriomas on my left ovary. I was scheduled to have them removed next week but the hospital cancelled my surgery due to the guidelines for the Coronovirus right now. Since my surgery is postponed I’m taking this time to do a lot of research. I’m learning excision is the best method. I’m wondering how likely they are to return or for more to develop if I’m not on anything after the surgery? My doctor said if I don’t suppress the hormones it will grow back but I thought if they were… read more

Consider looking in different states, if you find one that takes insurance it might be more doable even with the cost of travel

Its rare to have endo grow back, if it reoccur usually it's because it was missed or not fully removed. If you have expert excision you won't need hormonal suppression. However, endometriomas can be trickier. A good surgeon may be able to excise them if you want to keep your ovaries but they can recur from within the ovary unless you remove them. Also they can indicate deeper disease (DIE) endo elsewhere in the pelvis. Maybe it's a good thing you have some time to do some research & find a better excision specialist!

@A MyEndometriosisTeam Member Correct but it’s my understanding that if the endometriosis is excised by a Endometriosis Specialist who focuses on excision surgery the chances of reoccurrence is very low. The reason most women continue to have problems after surgery is the surgeon either burns the endometrial growths or doesn’t remove everything at the time of surgery due to not having enough skill set to do so. Most gynecologists just burn the growths off. There are not many doctors who are trained specialist in this field from what I’m learning. Birth control pills, hormone suppression etc does not cure endometriosis either it just can help with symptoms but can have a whole other set of problems due to side effects. Right now for me personally Im weighing the risks of trying a natural approach to help with my symptoms through supplements and diet until I can have my Endometriomas removed. That’s why I was curious of anyone’s experience personally with their return rate with Endometriomas or if the birth control pill or hormone suppression helped at least slow down the growth rate and or reoccurrence. Unfortunately it just seems Endometriosis is just a very tricky disease and it’s sad to see so many women suffering and the doctors only options is taking something that can also have bad effects on our bodies or multiple surgeries.

@A MyEndometriosisTeam Member Thank you! I just joined the other day 😊 I’m in PA so NY is the closest from the list I saw. Its just a matter of if my insurance will cover someone out of network. Wish there were more options in my state.
