Has Anyone Had A Hysterectomy For Fibroids?
A MyEndometriosisTeam Member asked a question 💭

I haven’t been diagnosed with endo but I do have a lot of the symptoms. I also have fibroids and I will be getting a hysterectomy as soon as my doc can schedule surgeries again (due to the pandemic). I’m scared, I don’t know anyone else my age who has had a hysterectomy (early 30s) though logically I know I’m not the only one. I’m also worried that when they do the surgery they’re going to find endo, which would actually be relieving in a way but also not, if that makes sense. Just a lot of… read more

Good call; yes, the cervix can definitely be a source of pain, so that's awesome advice Samantha. And good call @A MyEndometriosisTeam Member. I'm glad you're good with the hysterectomy and they have given you all the info. Taking the tubes is good; my surgeon did that too. She said that 35% of ovarian cancers start in the tubes, so since the uterus is gone, there's no point in leaving them and it reduces that cancer risk.

Smart man. He also plans to take the cervix too correct? I know some doctors think it is good to leave it but mine, who is in his late 70s early 80s now, said that is the worse thing a doctor can do, so please make sure he is taking the cervix also. Hope all goes well.

I had mine at 23. It is scary. Make sure you talk to your doctor about what all he/she plans to remove. Me and mine discussed everything including leaving my ovaries, which we did, plan and research help.

I posted a resource link to your other thread. First thing I would ask is if you're having your surgery with an excision surgeon? Most gynos are not well trained enough in endo to recognize it in all its forms, nor to remove it properly. Also, if you don't want a hysterectomy, you don't have to. Sometimes fibroids are smaller in number and they can just remove the fibroids; that's what happened to me. I would clarify with your doctor just how many fibroids you have and why a hysterectomy is recommended. To be clear, a hysterectomy does not cure endo. Removing ovaries doesn't cure endo either. I'll leave the resource link here again, just in case there was a problem with it on the other thread. Let me know if I can answer any questions or help at all.

Thanks for the reply! I talked with my doc, he is planning on leaving my ovaries, which is good, but planning on taking the Fallopian tubes.
