Visanne Vs Aygestin
A MyEndometriosisTeam Member asked a question 💭

Anyone tried both Visanne (Dienogest) and Aygestin (Norethindrone)? If so, please share your experience regarding effectiveness for endometriosis. Did one medication have more side effects (breakthrough bleeding, weight gain, bloating, and fluid retention, etc) than the other?

I’ve been on visanne since about may. My period stopped almost immediately, my face broke out but it’s much much better now. I felt super nauseous and weak the first few months, but it wore off, I’ve gained a bunch of weight and my breasts grew an entire size bigger after the first week, however, I have had zero pain since. It was effective almost immediately.

I am currently exploring and researching vitex, which is all natural. I’ll let you know what I find out !

Vissane worked for me, no weight gain, no acne. Effects were mood swings, low libido at times, nauseous feeling.

I have been on aygestin since January. I have had chronic headaches for years but I had a headache every day for the first 6 weeks. Along with the headaches, I bled lightly for the same amount of time. Then the back acne came. I went from no acne to just wow. Many huge painful spots, it was so gross but luckily it was mostly on my back. It did clear up after about 2 months. About 4 months in, I had extreme abdominal pain and bleeding that lasted 3 weeks. This was during peak covid quarantine so I could only talk to my doctors through email. They had me cease medication for a week to make me have a period but that just prolonged the bleeding. This happened again in July. I am going through it again right now but trying to just stay on it this time because the hormonal swing seems to impact my immune system because I get a documentable infection every time. I have missed a lot of work because I just keep getting sick and in covid time you can’t just “muscle through it” and go to work anyway. I have been sick more times than I can count on both hands this year. At first it seemed to help reduce my bad days from 20 a month to around 5-10 but now I think it is worse. I would not suggest this medication. Not to mention the Sex drive just disappears on it. I won’t lie, 2020 has been a difficult year without aygestins help. I don’t know if I would take it knowing what I know now. This is my experience though and I am still trying to piece together a full picture of what is going on with me.

If that is what you do, please let me know how it works for you. I am getting a second opinion in a few weeks and I want to talk about other medication options. I wish you the best of luck!

I have the same issue with getting infections. I'm wondering if dienogest is better and will provide less breakthrough bleeding.
