Pain After Having A Bowel Movement?
A MyEndometriosisTeam Member asked a question 💭

Hello, I have a question does anybody else experience anal/rectal pain after a bowel movement? My gynecologist has told me it’s normal because of the endometriosis but lately I’ve become almost afraid to have a bowel move because the pain will be so awful. It happens sometimes not always but it’s become a concern.

Thank you!

Yes, this happens to me during every cycle and continues for about 1 week after my cycle has finished. For me, it feels like I have rectal inflammation. I can feel the swelling. I sometimes even have shooting pains in my rectum before, during, and after bowel movements and the pains travels up to my back. My endo webbed/fused together several organs, including my bowel (this was observed from my laproscopy), and as a result, I get bowel related issues and rectal pain only during that time of the month. Have you had a laproscopy completed? That procedure should be able to tell you if the endo is on your bowel. Do you notice if rectal pain is there or flares up during your monthly cycle? Research bowel endometriosis. Best wishes to you.

You need a spasm medicine i don't remember the American version but i used to take buscopan. Also, movicol helps to loosen the stools my dr said to take it 3 times a day which helped reduce flares. When I'm constipated or have diarrhea i get a flare such as major shooting pain in my rectum but the movicol and spasm stimulate reduced it

Prune juice has become my best friend. People with this disease develop some sort of bowel issues. Trust me drink 2-4 oz twice a day. And no more constipation. I skip days if it turns into diarrhea, but fiber helps.

Sorry to hear you're experiencing this and i know this awful feeling. You need to eat lots of fibre like flaxseed, vegetables and fruits. I take magnesium glycinate at night which helps as well and eat fruits sometimes for breakfast. Other times I'll take a tablespoon of olive oil because that prevents hard stools in my opinion.

During that time of the month and about 1 week after my cycle is finished is when I only experience rectal pain. For me, I do not need laxatives, stool softeners or anything that will help loosen my bowels - my problem is the inflammation that is inside the rectum, which is due to the endo triggering inflammation. The swelling/inflammation inside makes it hard to pass a bowel movement and causes pain.

Please know you are not alone. Endo can affect many different organs and parts of your body. Endo can cause adhesions, which can also fuse together other organs. Hopefully an anti-inflammatory medication or natural anti-inflammatory remedies can help alleviate your pain.
