Dr. Serdar Bulun is the John J. Sciarra professor of obstetrics and gynecology and the chair of the department of obstetrics and gynecology at Northwestern University. As a physician-scientist, Dr. Bulun has conducted both basic and clinical research in steroid-related aspects of common gynecologic disorders, such as endometriosis and uterine fibroids, since 1991. He trained as an OB-GYN with a specialization in reproductive endocrinology. He has collaborated with many groups of scientists over the past three decades to study the roles of estrogen biosynthesis, steroid hormone receptors, signaling pathways, epigenetic defects, and somatic stem cells in the pathogenesis and survival of endometriosis tissue and stromal cells. As a result of this work, his team single-handedly introduced aromatase inhibitors as a novel class of medications to treat endometriosis.
Dr. Bulun has authored more than 250 original papers, review articles, and chapters in publications including The New England Journal of Medicine, Nature Medicine, PNAS, and Williams Textbook of Endocrinology. He was elected to the American Society for Clinical Investigation in 2003, the American Gynecological and Obstetrical Society in 2007, the Association of American Physicians in 2012, and the National Academy of Medicine in 2015. He currently serves on the National Institute of Child Health and Development board of scientific counselors, elected in 2016.
