Mirena For Treatment
A MyEndometriosisTeam Member asked a question 💭

Looking for input/experience with Mirena as treatment for endo. I had it put in during my laporoscopy in December, and it took almost 6 months for the side effects to settle (mood swings, extreme cramping, back pain, spotting, etc). At one point I had a 3mm cyst on my left ovary that caused a lot of pain and swelling and took 6 weeks to burst. Now my pain/swelling has been up and down and I'm debating getting it removed. I am also taking Yaz on top of the Mirena to see if doubling up will help… read more

I have loved having Mirena. It made my bleeding stop within two months, and has made a world of difference. I get mood swings once in a while, cramps each month for a good week (not immobilizing), but it has been a mostly positive experience. I'm currently having a flare up, but I don't think the Mirena has been a negative choice by any means.

I’ve had mine for 2 years and I am now suffering all over again. First 6 months was horrid, then seemed to settle. Now I’m getting significant pain all over again and break through bleeding. Plus I’ve had 2 cysts burst in the last 5 months. #agony. I don’t know what to do either 😏

I have had the merina for about 3 months now the first 2 months was non stop bleeding and cramping, and the cramping was so bad I thought I was in labor. Now my body is used to it, it has helped wonders with the pain. Every now and then I will have a cramp but nothing as bad as they were. I haven't had a period since the first 2 months of non stop bleeding. Which is great and what I wanted to stop the pain. I would just talk to your doc about it, but for me it has worked. Thank goodness...

@A MyEndometriosisTeam Member how scary! My doctor has told me that Mirena can cause cysts and that we would monitor, but that is should help with all the other symptoms and slow the growth of endo. The first months were horrible, and it did settle down but I'm still having so many symptoms so I'm not sure that the risks of Mirena is worth the benefits. Wish I could go prescription-free! I did call her today and ask that it be removed at my next apt (9/16).. Going to try and just take Yaz and see if that is enough, hopefully!

My experience with Mirena was difficult the first few months. The flow became less and less after a year my flow was minimal, but I still had pain. The pain increased about 1.5 years which lead to do a laproscopic surgery to be diagnosed with Endosalpingiosis. When I got the Mirena the obgyn told me it would help with my cysts. My ovary was covered in cysts. (I only have one ovary, lost the right due to a cyst rupturing during sit ups) I was told by my new obgyn that Mirena will not help cysts and she doesn't understand why I would of been told otherwise. I'm on microgesten now. It's not making any difference. I can't tell you that your experience will be the same. I hope it works for you. If you have an issue with cysts, I would double check with your doctor.
