Is Birth Control After Laproscopy Necessary?
A MyEndometriosisTeam Member asked a question 💭

Is it necessary to take birth control after laparoscopic removal of endometriosis. My doc is pushing it for 6 months but I live a holistic lifestyle and would prefer not to take it. Also I am skeptical about it because it contains estrogen which is what causes Endo. Does anyone have experience with taking it or not taking it and the rate of return of their endometriosis? Thanks sisters!

Hi. I fought my doctors about using hormones etc for 6 months because like you I live more natural/holistic, I don't like putting extra unneeded stuff in my body. That being said I did finally agree to try birth control since I was starting to take more pain pills to deal with my issues, and I want to be able to have sex with my husband again without crying or using self hypnosis. I did continuous birth control for three months and didn't notice an improvement in my pain if anything it made it so every day was a pain day. So I then agreed to try Lupron, I am 2 weeks into my first injection and I don't know how much of a pain improvement I've felt but I'm hoping to notice more in the next week or so. I know it's not much help. There's a supplement I am researching but what led me to it is my PCOS so I don't know how it will/would help with endometriosis or in my case adenomyosis.

After my first surgery I was given the Lupron shots for 6 months. The side effects ruined me...I now I have to see a dermatologist for melasma. After my second surgery I refused to go back on birth control as it didn't help with any of the pain or symptoms before. I now use Tumeric for pain and Ginger for my stomach. That seems to help more than any other script I have been given.

I've only just been diagnised with stage 2, but I've always suffered with pain when not on the pill. I've been on the pill for many years because of bad skin. On the pill, I never have any problems with pain. I think the pill is what's kept the endo in check. I've been on different pills through the years. The one I'm currently on is Minerva 25. The best for me in terms of side effects. But everyone reacts differently. I was also on Yaz (made my hair fall out ) and Yasmin (made me fat.. )but like i say, everyone reacta differently to different pills. I'd say give it it try! Because obviously it's worked for me. Good luck

I have done both. Taken and not taken it, and my endo returned regardless. After the birth of my daughter my dr and i had a long talk about bc and i asked her why would a dr prescribe bc with estrogen for an estrogen dominant disease. I have always wondered that. She said that actually more and more research is being done proving that estrogen bc is actually not good for endo. She put me on the mini pill which is progesterone only. My body still produced new endo and an endometrioma.

The pill has really helped me with my ENDO, i really believe I'd be much worse off if I hadn't been on it for the last 10 years (Started off going on it for my skin. kept on it because the pain off it was too much to bear.)
So I can vouch for the pill. You may need to try a few before you find your perfect fit. Minerva works best for me.
