Has Anyone Had Any Good Experiences Using Mirena IUD?
A MyEndometriosisTeam Member asked a question 💭

I am 25 years old and have been dealing with endometriosis for about 6 years now. It has been untreated for about 4 years and my new doctor is suggesting I try Mirena IUD. I have read nothing but horror stories about it and I'm afraid to get it. My biggest fears are the weight gain, depression/mood swings, irregular bleeding, hair loss, and perforation. My endometriosis symptoms are manageable at the moment with the most pain occurring during sex. I'm not even sure Mirena would help with that… read more

I have had the mirena for a few years now - this is my second one. I think it is different with everyone - I have had hair loss but that could be my age and its not clumps its just when I wash or brush my hair - a strand or two comes out but I have thick hair so it does not notice ! I have gained weight but I also have an underactive thyroid, I just learn to control my weight. Moods swings well of course Im a woman we all get these ! Im never depressed and I have no periods which is great ! I still suffer with painful sex though - I don't think that will ever change ! Im really grateful that I do not experience the great amounts of pain that other women do on this site - note sure if that's down to the Mirena ? my pain is manageable !

My doctor wants me to make the switch at the end of August to Mirena. Same with you, when I looked at it it was all not-so-happy stories.
I currently have the Skyla IUD, and I still had periods, some painful with it, but I wasn't diagnosed with Endo until about a month ago. Taking that new knowledge into account, I totally get why I was never symptom free, but I did have a lot of success with it.
I've started Lupron injections and was told I had to switch to a hormonal feedback therapy with a higher dosage of hormones to help alleviate the Lupron Depot side effects, which is Mirena.

I used to have the heaviest, longest periods (8-10 days) and the Mirena stopped all the bleeding which has been pretty lifechanging.

I have mood swings and lowered sex drive since the Mirena, but the good outweighs the bad in my experience.

Thanks for the responses! They do make me feel a little better. I know the only way to know for sure is to try it out myself - and if I hate it I can just get it removed. I just wish there were positive stories online
