I need to have this test done & was wondering what its like to drink the Barium & how much of it do you drink? Did you have any side effects afterwards like constipation or diarrhea?

Members shared their experiences with upper GI series and small bowel follow-through tests, offering reassurance about drinking the barium contrast. Several members described the barium as thick and chalky but manageable, typically requiring 16-32 ounces consumed over 45 minutes, with practical advice to sip slowly, request banana flavoring if available, and bring extra clothing in case of diarrhea afterward. A recurring theme was the importance of staying hydrated, being honest with technicians about nausea concerns, and understanding that white or chalky bowel movements are normal as the body expels the barium over the following days.

@A MyEndometriosisTeam Member...My last upper GI w/small bowel follow through was in October 2015. I went to radiology where they gave me the thick barium to drink. I sat in a private area while drinking 2-12 oz. cups. X-rays were done as I lay on the table.

Won't lie...Barium is gross, but doable. For me personally, the chalky thick barium takes a long while to exit my body. It's not good with already slow transit.

I'm guessing this is a result of the GI visit on Tuesday. I would get it done, personally.

@A MyEndometriosisTeam Member Hi. I've had to drink (gulp) that chalk down serial times. Some medical facilities have banana flavored, so they say. Just gulp down quickly w/o choking yourself. Drink plenty of water afterwards. You may notice white in your stool. Thats just your body expelling the barium. I have beem off this site for months. Forgive me. Traveling rough roads presently.

I wish you the best & full & complete recovery. Thank you for all your support & encouragement. I need it. Right now I'm typing with 1 hand. I am in excruciating pain & have no feeling in my left hand. I can't hold onto anything so I guess I have another problem. I don't know what type of dr. too see, I might end up at the E.R. Have a wonderful weekend & rest & take it easy. hugs tigreyes
