Can Anyone Provide Some Insight About Mirena IUD?
A MyEndometriosisTeam Member asked a question 💭

I think that the Depoprovera is ravaging my body. Bone pain and erosion was stated as a side effect. I was told take calcium and I will be fine. I am diligent in taking my calcium supplements yet and still my bones feel sore and painful especially in my feet when I walk. The pressure makes me feel like the bones in my feet are breaking. On top of that, my emotions are all over the place in the worst way possible. So now my doctor wants to switch me to mirena iud. Honestly, I dont know if I… read more

I loved my Mirena. I would give it a go - worse case scenario they have to take it out again. And the effects begin to wear off as soon as it is removed so, unlike the depo you don't have to wait for discomfort to decrease if you don't get on with it.

So, for me, the Mirena was great except I expelled it within 6 weeks. The expulsion sucked, but at least I knew that's what was happening and my gyno got me in quickly. I was offered another one, but at that point I thought I was having a hysterectomy, so they just gave me Vicodin for the horrible days and I went on my way. I was too afraid of the bone pain and mood swings to ever try Depo, so you're confirming my feelings on it.

Also, I read somewhere that Depo definitely affects your mood, so you're not alone there. I think it was Planned Parenthood's website; they are much more open and honest about side effects, IMHO. I have a friend with endo who loves her Mirena and is on her 3rd, I think. So maybe not a bad idea to try?

If you do wanna try an IUC, I would say to ask your doc about is if you can have something like misoprostol to help soften the cervix. My gyno did that for me and it made the insertion less painful. Oh, I also had Advil 1 hour before the appointment.

I had a Paragard before the Mirena, that later broke and had to be removed with during a HSG (basically, done in an OR so they could put dye in and find the fragments; worst pain of my life). That's when we tried the Mirena. Anyway, when the Paragard was inserted, I had no sort of cervical prep and it was awful. I think they can also do lidocaine injections into the cervix?

Ladies, thank you so much for the useful information. I don't know why I never thought to look at the Planned Parenthood website. I will do so now. I'm definitely taking what you ladies said under advisement when making my decision. I go for my 3rd depo shot on Sept. 27 and will need to make a decision before then. I actually think I am less apprehensive about making the switch now. Thank you once again for the information and support.

Yeah it sucks each obgyn doctor has their own ways of handling endo it's so frustrating being told different things and only thing I want is relief from the pain without pain meds that put me to sleep
