FULL HYSTERECTOMY OR PARTIAL?????
A MyEndometriosisTeam Member asked a question 💭

Hey Guys, I may be having a hysterectomy in a few to a couple weeks and I don’t know what to expect after the surgery. Can someone please tell me what to expect after surgery and has it helped getting rid of endometriosis pain and symptoms???? Should I have a total hysterectomy or a partial hysterectomy to get rid of endo pain and symptoms???

The first thing to clear up is what you mean by full or partial hysterectomy. Sadly, the terms are not always clarified by our doctors. I like this link because it gives the medical definition of each. A full hysterectomy means they remove the entire uterus. A partial hysterectomy means they leave the cervix behind.

I agree with @A MyEndometriosisTeam Member, as usual, that a hysterectomy doesn't cure endo. It definitely cures adenomyosis, which I had at agonizing levels. So I don't regret my total hysterectomy. I kept my ovaries.

I suggest asking for a binder. It is an elastic thing that wraps around your body. It makes coughing and sneezing so much less painful after. Having someone to care for you 24/7 for at least the first two weeks is important. You will be very tired and unable to stand for long. Cook a bunch of freezer friendly meals so that your caregiver doesn't have to cook, especially that first week.

Clean your house really well (if you're like me) because you won't be able to for about 6 weeks. It's too much on the body. If you do too much, your pain will skyrocket.

I had a hysterectomy at the time of my second excision surgery. Excision surgery is the gold standard of endo treatment, so if you haven't yet I would suggest finding an excision surgeon. There's only a few hundred in the world, but they are well worth it. Nancy's Nook on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/groups/NancysNookEndoEd/) is a good resource. Lots of articles and a list of excision surgeons.

I’m 97% pain free since my two excision surgeries, so I’m a huge fan. I’m not saying it’s a cure, but it is the gold standard of treatment and helps the majority of EndoWarriors who have it. I also needed lots of pelvic floor physical therapy and diet changes. Many of us need multiple therapies for healing.

I’ll leave a resource list here of stuff about endo I've found helpful over the years. Other users have said it helped too. It covers things from endo basics to excision surgery to diet and wellness. Let me know if I can do anything. Happy to help however I can.

A hysterectomy won't do anything for endo pain. It will cure adenomyosis (painful, heavy periods, look it up if you aren't familiar). Many women with endo have adeno but adeno is grossly underdiagnosed, so there's a misconception (and old myth) that it helps endo but it doesn't.

I had a hysterectomy for adeno in August 2019 and it's helped me so much but in the fall, I had a VERY clear endo flare up. With or without ovaries, it doesn't help endo.

In October I had a total hysterectomy (I have my ovaries) because of Adenomyosis. You will be sore and tired. Listen to your docs directions and rest but try to walk when you can. I took short trips around my bedroom.

I have heard that it is best to keep 1 ovary so that you won’t have to take hormones.

Yes I had a total full hestorectomy and I was sent home day of surgery and recovered at home for 2weeks as of today and I already feel great and no pain
