No Change After Laparoscopy And D&C
A MyEndometriosisTeam Member asked a question 💭

New here and first post. Soo happy I found this community. I had a laparoscopy 2 months ago. I had right endometrium. My doctor removed 2 cysts on my right ovarie and a few small ones on my left ovarie. She also did a D&C. I'm on my second period since surgery and I feel like it's been worse/the same since before surgery 😭. Has this happened to anyone. I'm at a loss and dont know what to do. Birth control or hysterectomy. Any advice would be appreciated 💕

Welcome and I’m sorry you’re going through that. Just FYI, removing the uterus or ovaries will not cure endo. The first question is whether you had excision or ablation surgery. The gold standard of endo treatment is excision surgery. That's different than ablation, which is most commonly done. Ablation means they burn the top of the endo implant and leave it there. It makes more scar tissue and can increase pain and decrease fertility.

Excision surgery, on the other hand, is when a specially trained surgeon recognizes and removes the entire endo implant, down to the root. There's only a few hundred surgeons globally who do it, but it's worth it. The majority of people who have it have less pain and increased fertility.

Having a laparoscopy does NOT necessarily mean you had excision surgery. It depends on whether the surgeon who did the operation is an excision surgeon, which means they ONLY do excision. NOT a combination of excision and ablation. That does not count. Also, for me, I said "why bother having surgery just to diagnose; I want the surgeon who knows excision to just do it while I'm under anesthesia!"

Feel free to read my story and recommendations tab. There’s more details on the surgeons I consulted or used. Nancy’s Nook is a great resource. There’s tons of articles on endo and a list of vetted excision surgeons. It used to be only on Facebook, but they have an independent website now.

I’m 97% pain free since my two excision surgeries, so I’m a huge fan. I did have a hysterectomy (entire uterus, including cervix removed) but kept my ovaries. In my case, that was for horrible adenomyosis. Hysterectomy does not cure endo and neither does removing ovaries. I’m not saying excision surgery is a cure, but it is the gold standard of treatment and helps the majority of EndoWarriors who have it. I also needed lots of pelvic floor physical therapy and diet changes. Many of us need multiple therapies for healing.

I’ll leave a resource list I made of stuff about endo I've found helpful over the years. Other users have said it helped too. It covers things from endo basics to excision surgery to diet and wellness. Also, I try to update it but it doesn’t always save changes, so I put updates in the comments. Other users have shared links there too, so check those out. Let me know if I can do anything. Happy to help however I can.

Hi welcome and i had a laproscopy last may felt good for about 5 days, then pain got progressively worse and still very very heavy periods.i had scar tissue on my right ivary and bowel.
I have tried so many hormone pills nothing has made a difference. Ive ended up having to take morphine just to avoid getting taken into hospital die to the amount of pain.
I am going to see a private gyneocologist to see if a hysterectomy would benifit me as i have tried so many routes to cope woth my pain and heavy bleeding but all those routes failed.
Good luck xxx hope you find some relief xx

I still had no relief in pain for a month or two after my excision surgery. I was depressed and felt hopeless. Then I slowly started to feel my symptoms lessen a bit. I wasn’t able to start pelvic floor PT until 3/4 months post op due to COVID, but once I did it was amazing. I stuck to my PT and did at home stretches. My pain is not at zero, but it’s so small that it doesn’t restrict my ability to do anything. Everything I found painful prior to surgery is now no longer painful. Hang in there.

I’m sorry you’re still in pain! It’s been a really long time since my surgery, but i remember being in a lot of pain after surgery of course & only noticing a minor difference in my pain level. If anything, I got a confirmed diagnosis of stage 3 with implantation on my liver too. Accupuncture did wonders for me plus Errin birth control after my son seemed to help more than other birth cobtrol options. It’s about finding what works for you— trial & error mostly! Good luck and i hope it gets better for you.
