How Helpful Are MRI’s In Trying To Get A Diagnosis Prior To Having A Laparoscopy?
A MyEndometriosisTeam Member asked a question 💭

Insurance would only approve a pelvic MRI that didn’t show any cysts. However, I’ve been on birth control and hormone balancers for years to help with side effects, so large cysts hopefully wouldn’t grow. What are people’s experiences with MRIs in trying to get a diagnosis?

I just recently had an MRI done to follow up on a cyst and the report came back citing there were a few endometriomas and some growth. My Dr told me that MRI is very useful, however for a 100% diagnosis it needs to be put under a microscope.

The only thing x-rays can pick up is cysts, no endo :( I’m pretty sure the only way to get a diagnosis is through surgery. I know, so unfair. Hopefully we can improve out technology some day so x-rays can pick up endo

Completely pointless sis, you can have it because if it's bad enough it might show
But it's pointless
I had a incy but of endo that caused massive symptoms and of course that would never show on an MRI and neither do ultrasounds
I went through at least 20 of these because the doctors kept trying to just use that as if I'm stupid, wasting money and time
The first ones are worth it but not for a diagnosis

I think it’s different for everyone… I had many ultrasounds and pelvic exams, Pap smears, etc that all came back with nothing and then my primary care referred me to an endo specialist who completely bypassed everything else and said let’s do surgery.
