How Can I Get My Doctor To Take My Treatment Seriosuly?
A MyEndometriosisTeam Member asked a question 💭

I'm 20 years old and only started having severe pelvic pain and digestive issues at the very beginning of 2023. I have seen a ton of different doctors over the course of five months and was told absolutely nothing about my condition. I've had two ultrasounds so far and have one coming up. My most recent doctor suspected I have endometriosis based on all of my symptoms but when I have questions I'm only given vague responses or the "it could be" answer. I'm really tired of not getting the… read more

You definitely have to advocate for yourself...and, sadly, often bring someone else to testify on your behalf that a) you're not crazy and it's not "just in your head" and b) that you're not exaggerating how bad it is. It took me almost a year, year and a half to get a laporoscopy and the only reason I got it was my other half threatened to break this one bitchy female doc's fingers if she didn't actually help me instead of dismissing me. She did the laporoscopy...and gutted me like a fucking fish! The incision pain was way worse with my laporoscopy compared to my hysterectomy. The scars left behind too were horrific vs barely noticeable. There are plenty of docs who also don't do laporoscopies that much on a regular basis, so unless the endo is extremely noticeable, they might totally miss it. Or miss additional issues. It took me 5 more years till I finally felt like I found a doc who listened and gave me a hysterectomy, like I wanted. It's been 8 years since the hysterectomy and I'm still in excruciating pain and no doc wants to do a damn thing again cause they're afraid that if I had such a bad and prolonged pain response to the hysterectomy, surely they should never cut me open again, ever, even for endo excision. None of the docs I've seen recently are excision experts, though, that's the thing. It is so hard to find a decent doc and eventually the good ones run out of ways to help you and you gotta move on anyway. The best way I've found to filter out the docs who don't know squat is by asking questions you know might lead to red flags that you can't ignore. One good one - if a doc suggests Lupron or any other prostate cancer drug that became marketed as birth control, then a gender transition drug, is a major red flag. Others are docs saying pregnancy or hysterectomy can help endo. It's bullshit. Research is the best weapon. If a doc hates that you do your research or looks down on you for that, chuckles, get a new doc. That doc has a ready made answer for you. That doc might act like he hears you, but he/she isn't listening.

You have to be a constant advocate for yourself. Doctors are so vague because they either don’t know enough or weren’t taught enough about endo cause it’s a woman disease, mainly known just for infertility. Not enough attention was paid to the disease symptoms and cure. My doc can’t do anything else for me she says, I actually feel for the doctors too cause it must be frustrating to not be able to help or explain it cause they weren’t taught about it properly. Just keep going, your hard work for yourself and your health will pay off.

Push to see a gynaecologist first, if you say laparoscopy straight away they won't care and almost definitely won't give you the referral
You have to keep keep pushing, I even went to a&e a couple of times and faked literally so much to get my diagnosis because I knew my symptoms
And they just wouldn't flare up when I had an appointment
So I exaggerated and lied about lots of things
Make it sound bad but it must also be real and consistent
No joke I literally held the same story for years and had to learn not to back track on anything, it was hard because I'm not a good liar, I hate lies, but that was the only way they got me through

Push for a laparoscopy, pain isn't normal and you should never feel like you're being a pain for wanting answers. It took me years to finally have a laparoscopy, at that point I had stage 4 endo, all over my bowel, bladder and ovaries. Keep pushing! Hope you get answers soon <3
