Has Lupron been effective for stopping excessive bleeding in endometriosis?
Lupron (leuprolide) is a GnRH agonist that works by lowering estrogen levels, which can reduce endometriosis symptoms including bleeding. It's designed to treat endometriosis pain and lesion growth rather than specifically targeting excessive bleeding.
Some MyEndometriosisTeam members have found Lupron helpful. One member shared: "I was on Lupron for a year and it was the only thing that helped my endometriosis. There's some side effects like night sweats and hot flashes but they're manageable."
However, it's worth noting that hormonal contraceptives (birth control pills, patches, or hormonal IUDs) have been more specifically shown to reduce excessive menstrual bleeding and may be more cost-effective options to discuss with your doctor first.
One member found relief with progesterone instead: "I was bleeding 24/7 for over 1.5 years. Then I went on progesterone, and it all went away."
Since Lupron is expensive and comes with side effects like hot flashes and night sweats, it's important to discuss all your options with your gynecologist. They can help determine if Lupron is the best choice for your specific situation or if other treatments might work better for controlling your bleeding.
