I had it done along with the excision but they also thought going in that they had seen a Tumour on the ultrasound (turned out to be large lump of scar tissue) plus I have family history of uterine cancer... I can't say whether it was the main excision surgery or the dnc that alleviated pain but I did have pretty good relief for almost a whole year... I was under when they did it but from my understanding it is not too horrible to have done and if your doc is recommending due to thickening it's better safe than sorry imo
