There are a couple excision specialists in the UK. They are also on Nancy’s nook list. I’m not sure if the take NHS patients though. I know Dr. Mann is no longer able to take NHS patients. A lot of women have had to go private though to get the care they need. A lot of the excision specialist say “if your doctor delivers more babies than he does endo cases, he is not a true endo specialist.” There are a lot of gynos out there that call themselves endo specialists but you will turn around and say pregnancy and I hysterectomy is a cure.. in the same sentence. Which is absolutely incorrect. If you allow an unqualified gyno to do your surgery, and they do ablation, you will most likely end up having to have multiple surgeries. A really good excision specialist may be able to do just one surgery and you’ll never need another one again. Of course, this isn’t ever case. But many women have had that success!

Thanks for your reply! Very helpful and informative. I have put in a request to join Nancy’s Nook. The stats are quite alarming, I am based in the UK however so does this apply here? I will be certain to ask my Gynae what the intentions are at my pre op, I did do some research on him before attending my consultation and he was recommended to me, which speaks volumes in my book. I guess it still just a waiting game as to what they find.

Your symptoms sound all too familiar to us. An endometrioma is basically endometriosis on the ovary (of course in cyst form). Generally if you have an endometrioma this means there is also endo elsewhere in the body. This isn’t always the case, but definitely most of the time. I know your gyno is amazing. But truth is... only about 100 out of 50,000 gynos are qualified enough to recognize endo in all its forms and treat it. Before you let your gyno do the lap I would ask him a few questions.. what does he plan on doing if he does find endo? Would he use ablation (burning it off) or excision (cutting it out)? If he says ablation.. say thank you, but no thank you. Ablation has at least an 80% return rate. There are endo excision specialists out there who do nothing but endo cases. They can do the lap to diagnose and excise endo in one surgery (including bowel resection if needed), and they will even most likely be able to save your ovary. Having a hysterectomy, even removing the ovaries, does not cure endo. Endo creates its own estrogen and sometimes even progesterone!! So if you want my honest opinion... seek out an excision specialist who can take care of everything in one surgery! Join Nancy’s nook on Facebook if you haven’t. She has a list of endo excision specialists. She also has a list of questions to ask a “non-nook” doctor before having a lap. A non nook doctor is any regular gyno that is not on the Nancy nook list. The doctors on the nook list have been vetted by thousands of patients and will be your best bet!
