Surgery Or Not For 7.2 Cm Mass On Left Ovary
A MyEndometriosisTeam Member asked a question 💭

I ended up in the ER on Sunday with the worst pain in my life on my left side. I have 5 kids 4 of which were all natural with no meds, at one point the pain ib felt on Sunday was worse. Yesterday Gyno said I have a large mass on my left ovary. He thinks it's an Endometrioma. He was so weird and just kept telling me whatever I want to do. He doesn't think it will go away on its own but said it can. He said my uterus is thick and most likely endometriosis ( he gave it a name that starts with an A… read more

I experienced this with my ovaries. With my left ovary my doctor told me that surgery to remove the mass and my ovary was my best option because it wouldn't go away on it's own. I didn't want to have another surgery due to endometriosis (at this time I had 5 different surgeries due to endo already including a hysterectomy). I decided to give it some time to see if it would go away on it's own. The mass ended up causing my ovary to flip and I had emergency surgery to remove the ovary. They left my right ovary at this time because it was "completely healthy". 5 1/2 months later I went to the emergency room for severe abdomen pain again. They found a mass on the right ovary and I was scheduled for surgery about 2 weeks later.
I would personally weigh the pros and cons of getting a hysterectomy and oopherectomy. I know you said you're not having any more children but also discuss with your doctor if you will start hormones or not, etc.
While having a hysterectomy and oopherectomy does help alot of women sometimes it doesn't and you can still end up with more problems later on down the road.
I personally wish my doctor would have removed both ovaries when he did my hysterectomy, that way I wouldn't have had to go through 3 surgeries to get it all out.

The 'a' word you're looking for is adenomyosis. It's when the linkngbof the wall of the uterus breaks through and grows within it. It's not endometriosis, it's considered different but most will have endo as well as adenomyosis. I have stage 4 of both. The uterus can becaone so enlarged it can press against your colon, sacrum, into the spine, and organs. It can be incredibly painful. Hysterectomy will cure adenomyosis, but it won't cure endo as katerplew is saying. I think you need a specialist who can explain your options clearly and the reasons behind them.

I'm 27. I had my hysterectomy at 22 years old. My first oopherectomy was when I was 24 and my second oopherectomy was right after my 25th birthday just 6 months after my first oopherectomy.
Sadly having a hysterectomy and a double oopherectomy didn't heal my endometriosis. Endometriosis can be near impossible to get rid of according to the new specialist I'm seeing. If there is any small endometrium cells they miss during your surgery then it can flare again and cause you to have excruciating pain and other medical problems endometriosis causes.
If the medication I started doesn't begin to ease my pain at all I will have to have another surgery and if that doesn't help I will have 2 options. Option #1 will be having injections that will "deaden" the two main nerves in my stomach that are responsible for almost all endometriosis pain. The only problem with that is it doesn't always work or eventually wears off.
Option #2 will be having another surgery and a neurosurgeon go in and remove nerves.
You're welcome. I wish you the best of luck. I hope if you decide to just have a total hysterectomy and oopherectomy that it helps you and you no longer have to deal with endometriosis.

From my experience I would definitely get the surgery done and not waiting. When my ovary flipped due to having a mass it almost killed me. My doctor informed me after my emergency surgery that he was pushing so hard for me to do the surgery before it flipped instead of waiting because in many cases when an ovary flips it is life threatening. Again though that's just from my experience. If you decide to go ahead and have this surgery maybe discuss just having a total hysterectomy including removal of both ovaries now instead of putting it off if that's what you are leaning towards. The more surgeries you have the harder it can be on your muscles and everything to heal. I have had 11 abdominal surgeries now and my last surgery was in May. I had the worst time healing from that surgery and now my Gyno believes my endometriosis has flared back up and I'm looking at yet another surgery. I definitely recommend trying to have as few surgeries as possible.

The way both my OBGYN and endo/fertility specialist described Adenomyosis to me after being diagnosed with it and stage 4 endo after my last lap (2017) that helped me understand it better was that instead of the endometriosis being inside your uterus, it is in the uterine muscle itself. My endo specialist told me that there was no way of getting rid of the Adenomyosis unless I had a full hysterectomy, which at this time I do not want one. I would talk to your doctor some more about the hysterectomy before going through with it, but I would definitely look into getting the surgery for the cyst so that you don't have to worry about your ovary flipping and it becoming an emergency. Tackle it before it gets bad. Prayers and good thoughts/vibes sent your way!
