Period vs spotting?

Hey - sorry for a stupid question but..
How do you differentiate between a light day of your period and spotting? I've had my period for 8 days. Today (9th day) there is bleeding but it's very very light. Would that be considered a continuation of the period (that is a 9th day) or as spotting as it's so minimal? Thanks!
