Hey, Licia29, There could always be more going on that is unseen in a scan, but anything of significant size would be see in that scan. Depending on the doctor they can tell what kind of cyst it is by the way it looks in the scan. Sounds weird, right? I'm so used to ultrasounds at this point that I can tell the difference in the type of cyst I'm looking at. Endometrioma's are darker in shade on the scan. Dermoid cysts are white and look kind of fluffy. The size of your cyst does not determine the level of pain you will or will not have. I have had a 3 cm cyst that twisted my ovary and caused me to double down in pain, vomit, and ultimately prompt an emergency laparotomy. Presently, I have a 6cm dermoid cyst that will sometimes stab, pulse, and is slowly sucking the life out of me.
