What are your thoughts on generic medication?

I went to the pharmacy to collect my Visanne and the pharmacist told me that there are generic medications to Visanne that are cheaper (currently i am paying R450 every month cash for the Visanne) . I wanted to know what are your thoughts on the generics and does it work?
