Surgery For Endo
A MyEndometriosisTeam Member asked a question šŸ’

So I will be having Surgery probably early November or so to get rid of my Endo and I am having a hysterectomy. I was wondering if anyone had advice on before and after surgery. This will be my first surgery ever.

I'm scheduled for one Dec 5th. HOWEVER, I've decided against it. Too invasive. It makes me feel depressed giving up motherhood. I'm on depo now and its helping some. I've had 3 endo surgeries and still suffer. I'm going with a holistic approach.....natural herbs (insurance covers it) and physical therapy, hormone treatment with birth control. Support helps. Try to research. If you're not 100% about it, do not do the surgery. Pro and con it out on paper. Good luck.

Hi. First of all good luck on your surgery. I hope it helps in ways you need. I had my hysterectomy 7 years ago. It absolutely did not get rid of my endo. My pain and stomach cramps isnt as much though. I still develops cysts and since then had 3 laparoscopy surgery to laser them off. It still went on to damage my bladder, recently i had a sacral modulation implant on my spine to help. That's my experience. I pray that it helps you šŸ™

I didn't have a hysterectomy, but I had the surgery to laser the endo off. It was also my first major surgery ever. Headphonerecord made some good points. I was in alot more pain than I originally expected and it took longer to heal then I anticipated. Give yourself time and don't overdo it. One thing I'll add is to ask for nausea medicine. When you have stitches in your stomach the worse pain ever is the spasms from throwing up. Also of course don't forget to take something so you don't get constipated from laying around afterward. Best of luck!

Hello. I had hysterectomy and excision surgery 2 plus years ago (I kept my ovaries, I also had 7 fibroids and adenomyosis) and it was also my first ever surgery. I became immobile due to a large mass of endo in my lower back/sacral wall.

I wish I had asked more questions about how the surgery would impact my bladder. My bladder problems worsened but eventually improved with pelvic floor pt and lifestyle adjustment. 2 years after the surgery my quality of life has greatly improved relative to the suffering I had endured for the decades prior. Post surgery pelvic floor PT really helped. Be sure your surgeon is an excision expert.

Pre-surgery - clean your space, you should not be vacuuming or cleaning for at least two weeks/ until you get the ok from your surgeon. If you have the resource for it, arrange your space for the ultimate, cozy comfort recovery nest, ask a loved one to help. Arrange for friends to help you get from the hospital and to your follow up appointments.

As soon as you can in your recovery at the hospital, do approved movements, gentle walking in the hall, arm and neck movements, it will reduce the pain from the gas used for laparoscopy. Keep doing gentle approved movements until all the gas has gone, ask about this pre surgery.

Prepare some honey or easy on the stomach tea or drops for sore throat post surgery. I had also prepared a giant Tupperware of rolled oats oatmeal that I could break off a little bit and warm up for a high fiber thing to take my post surgery meds with.

I arranged with friends to come and walk with me as much as possible for the weeks/months after surgery. Started with little short ones and worked up to longer ones. Having a buddy show up lifted my spirits and made the walks so much easier.

Finally, recovery takes time, though I was moving about pretty quickly after surgery, everything was exhausting and it took a year to feel like I had a decent amount of energy. I hope this helps, though it was a more complicated and longer recovery than I anticipated and though I am not pain or flare free, my quality of life is so much better.
